Harvey He is a current MSIL student pursuing the Data Science technical track. We caught up with him to learn more about his experience in the program and his plans after graduation.

Why did you decide to pursue an MSIL degree?

MSIL is an interdisciplinary program that combines engineering and business, making it a great fit for my academic background. During my undergraduate studies, I pursued a major in fire protection engineering and minored in business administration. In my freshman year, I founded a company and successfully ran it for two years and ended up selling it in my third year. Additionally, the flexibility of MSIL, offering both the technical and management tracks, gave me the opportunity to transition into the data science technical track, where I could explore my interests in AI, machine learning, and data science.

What has been your favorite course or experience throughout your time in the MSIL program thus far?

My favorite course is the one taught by Professor Sascha Cocron. Sascha is a very special professor and an incredibly professional business consultant. I always learn a lot from him. My most valuable experience has been the close-knit community at the Center for Leadership Education, which has allowed me to connect with various professors and build deep relationships with them. My advisor, Sarah Smith, has been a great mentor to me—I meet with her every few weeks to discuss my progress, and she always kindly guides me through any challenges I am facing.

Tell us about your experience participating in the Immersion Program.

I participated in the London Immersion Program led by Sascha Cocron and Ryan Hurley, where I spent two weeks studying at Imperial College London. The experience was enriching in many ways. Firstly, I got to experience life in the UK and what it feels like to study at Imperial College. What made me the happiest, however, was the opportunity to meet outstanding professors in Imperial and MSEM students, with whom I built strong friendships.

What are your plans after graduation?

My dream is to get involved in technology and become a successful entrepreneur, ultimately founding a company that benefits human society. I will keep working hard to pursue my dream after graduation.

Would you recommend the MSIL program to other students who are considering a postgraduate degree?

Absolutely. When we love a school or a program, it’s often because of the people. The MSIL program fosters a tight-knit community where students and professors can form deep connections, and the faculty members are incredibly supportive. Additionally, MSIL offers a highly flexible curriculum, blending online and in-person courses. This flexibility has allowed me to dedicate time each semester to taking undergraduate courses in subjects that interest me, such as French, microeconomics, and various AI-related courses.
